Business Description:

Web marketing firm specializing in search engine optimization and managing pay per click search marketing campaigns for clients to maximize ROI for online advertising spend.

About Your Business:

What Inspired Your Business: Years and years of success in managing web sites, including several that I personally own ("I'm not only the founder of SEO Columbus, I'm also a client"). I enjoy working with clients and thrive off of the challenge of the competition of SEO and web marketing.

Most Unusual Client, or Client Story: As I mentioned, I am also a client of SEO Columbus, and as such many of my greatest successes are sites that I own. One of which is HousePaintingEstimates.com, which is a site which basically generates leads from homeowners looking to have their home painted and matches them with my own contractor network. The SEO work that I have done has resulted in top 3 rankings for all targeted keywords, topping competitors that claim on their website that they spend over $20 million / year in online advertising. My annual ad spend has never topped $1,000 and I have dominated them for years. That is when I knew I should work to do the same for other companies.

Recent Business Surprise: I have been offered several full time opportunities, including one opportunity with Microsoft to manage an aspect of their new Ad Center paid search advertising program. Despite the ROI that my experience can bring to a company, I find that I am most valuable working with these companies in a partnership basis. I've also had to turn down a decent amount of consulting work due to the past successes I've had and that exposure, but I find the most thrill in working with a company that has great potential, and working out a contract in which I am given a portion of the revenues so that the client's success is directly related to my own.

Fun Facts:

Top Selling Product/Service: SEO Recommended Action Plans

Best Place to Get Work Done: Actual work... in my home office late at night after my two daughters have gone to bed.

Coolest Personal Item on Your Desk: Being a huge hockey fan from Columbus, it has to be my Rick Nash autographed hockey puck or my Gilbert Brule game used signed stick (that one's not actually on my desk, but hanging over it)

Where You Plan to Retire: Likely near a large body of water in a location featuring a warm climate.

Best Networking Tool: Speaking at SEO Conferences is the best networking tool possible

My Most Interesting/Challenging Business Problem:

Naming Your Business

Business Challenge:

Finding a great name for my internet marketing company.

Solution:

Since such a large part of search engine optimization relies on targeted keywords, page titles and even keywords in the domain name, I found that by combining my primary service (SEO) with my general geographic location (Columbus), I found a business name that was automatically optimized for search engines. This almost automaticaly ensures that any business in Central Ohio that searches for a local web marketing firm is going to find me immediately. I also use the name for posting in industry forums and the name has almost become a bit of a nickname for me. I speak at technology conferences quite a bit, and seemingly more people know me as "Columbus" than as "Joe".
