I recently bought a Windows Vista Laptop (I also have a Mac Laptop) and I'm looking for the right type of software for my computer. I do a services business (massage therapy) with light inventory (essential oils & tea). I really don't have the money for Quickbooks and a friend of mine who offered to let me use their 2006 software isn't compatible with Windows Vista. I see that Quicken has a home/business version and I'm wondering if that is enough to help out. Please let me know your thoughts as I want to make the most of my new computer. Thank you!

QuickBooks Simple Start is a free version of QuickBooks that might be right for your business. If your business grows and you need advanced inventory capabilities then you would need to upgrade to QuickBooks Pro or Premier.

Thank you jbailey! I so appreciate it. I am downloading it now and look forward to learning the new software. Have a wonderful Christmas!

Genesis, Before going too far deep into using Quicken, take a look at Quickbooks Online. Based on what you told us, Online Edition will be a better long term fit than Quicken. Not to mention, free tech support if you use Online, dual back, anytime/anywhere access. I come across ppl using Quicken and then wanting to convert to one of the Quickbooks Editions and it isn't fun or pretty. Just some thoughts. You can private email to me if you want.

Thank you Dew. I might consider doing that since the Quickbooks simple Start didn't really work for me. It just kept looping around and wouldn't allow me to use it. So I uninstalled it.

QB SimpleStart is nothing but a checkbook register. I wouldn't even bother to use it for my personal checkbook. Quicken H&B is a great product if you have a small service-based business. However, I don't believe it tracks inventory.

Okay, now I'm super confused. I just bought Quickbooks Simple Start for my home-based business. What I sell is a customized product, but I have very low inventory. I wanted to be able to track my personal checking account as well with this product. Did I buy the right thing? Or should I have bought Quicken H&B? Can I return the Quickbooks once I've already downloaded it?

My husband is starting a floor and floorcovering business, and I am in the need to purchase a software product that can help us track expenses, employee time, categorize materials purchased for work etc. I am not sure which product to buy, Quicken Home and Business or QuickBooks Pro? I was leaning towards the later since it seems like it has more capability, but I am not sure. Any help is appreciated

my 2 cents... firstly i am as indecided on which software to go with myself... but... if you plan to become profitable, and plan to actually one day start tracking inventory... just go pro...

My boyfriend is a real estate agent. He does not have inventory but he has expenses for such things as marketing/advertising that he would likee to track. What do you reccomend?

I use Quickbooks Pro for my business and love it. Of course I need to be able to track the inventory and Quickbooks works! I actually bought the full version on Ebay and saved about $75 dollars rather then buying it from the store...Just make sure you don't get the education version which it will tell you in the description... Good Luck Tina K.

We have photography studio and already have Quickbooks Pro 2006, however my husband is suggesting we buy Quicken as it will be more for home and business. Business is prime concern (tax receipt keeping, linking checks, inventory etc) although will also need to keep personal bills separate. Is it worth going with Quicken or just another reason to spend money? Thanks.

I am a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and affiliated Intuit product retailer. If anyone is interested in QB versions please visit my website. www.simplyaccounting-bookkeepingsvcs.com. There is a link to my on-line store front. I can save you 20% off of shelf prices. As a QB advisor I recommend anyone starting their books with a need for inventory tracking start with Pro. If you out grow pro you can upgrade (discounted). Pro will handle a good size data file. Simple start is basic accounting essentials. Money in, money out. No inventory capabilities. Quicken is not for business use. If you are considering tracking personal expenses, set-up a second company in your pros version. This will allow you to get what you need for the business and tracking of your personal finances. I can support any QuickBooks questions, give me a call, send me an email. I would be happy to pass on whatever I can that will help. I have sample packets, trial disks, etc. Thanks

Great questions on Quicken/QuickBooks. QB Pro works for most people, but for the person that asked about floor covering...maybe not, and here's why: QB Pro does not provide for multiple units of measure. So if you purchase 100 yards of carpet, you bring it into inventory as 100 yards, then you sell it by the yard and all works well with QB Pro. However, if you choose to bring it in as a different unit of measure - or you sell it differently than by the yard - then you'll need to go with something like QB Premier which has multiple units of measure. I use Quicken for home purposes because with a simple click of the mouse I can download/update our 401k information. Other than that, it's a glorified checkbook that works well to keep my personal finances correct down to the penny. I wouldn't recommend it for business - it's not as clean to work with and it's not supported by most CPAs. Again, QB Pro works well for most (but not all) and avoid Quicken for anything but personal. ...words of advice from a QB ProAdvisor.

Can Quicken Home & Business import data from Quickbooks Pro 2005 or should I just get Quicken 2008 Pro?

Good question - and I don't know the answer. You could probably call Intuit and ask them. My guess is that you can't "go backwards" by important from QuickBooks to Quicken. However, I believe that it's possible to important FROM Quicken to QuickBooks.

I will be starting soon a smaill trucking company. I'll need to manage payroll for a couple of drivers, keeping track of expenses and such. Which should I use to get this started? If possible would like to keep track of home expenses too. thanks

QuickBooks Pro (usually $150-$200) should work well for your trucking company and I'd go with the Enhanced Payroll (if you are doing it yourself). Standard payroll works well too, but I like the built in tax forms (941 and other state specific forms) in the Enhanced version. I have some clients who want printed checks and others who want direct deposit....QuickBooks payroll is capable of doing both very nicely. As a business owner, sometimes it's worth it to pay someone else to handle payroll because it can be a pain and the stakes are high if you don't do everything correct..

OROURMICHAEL, Be sure that you don't mix business with personal. You can create multiple files using QB and you might call one "Orourmichael's Business" and the other one "Orourmicheal's Home". I like using Quicken because we have some investments and Quicken will automatically update our 401k and other investments with the click of a mouse...QuickBooks doesn't have that capability. For the convenience of updating our investmenets I think it's worth it to spend an additional $50-$60 on Quicken.

OROURMICHAEL, One last thing...ensure your QB file is set up correctly from day one. It's worth it to take the extra time and expense to do it right at the beginning rather than to try and figure out what it going on (or going wrong) week or months later. In addition, your CPA won't hate you for bringing in a file that is so messed up that it's basically worthless to them. Just words of wisdom...
